Department of State Computer Glitch Causes Major Visa Issuance Delays

The Department of State has revealed that a major computer glitch has impacted its ability to issue visas and US passports. The problem has affected operations worldwide and is not limited to any particular country or visa category. The Department is working on the problem but there is no indication when the problem will be resolved.

Foreign nationals who are already outside the US and have a visa appointment should appear as directed unless the Consulate notifies them that the appointment has been cancelled. We cannot rule out the possibility that the Department has the ability to issue visas in some cases.

However, any foreign nationals planning travel abroad who will need to obtain an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa before returning to the US should reevaluate their travel plans in light of this unfortunate development.

As of this morning, the Department’s website has not been updated to provide any specific advice or guidance. We will provide an update as soon as we receive any pertinent additional information.
