Since the TN category was created, qualified citizens of Canada and Mexico have been admitted to the U.S., and granted extensions of stay, in increments of only one year at a time. This has often created inconvenience for the applicants and their U.S. employers.
On October 14, the Immigration Service announced that TN visa status will now be available for an initial period of up to three years, with an extension of stay also available in increments of three years.
This change brings the admission/extension periods available in line with H-1B visa status.
Unlike H-1B status however, which with few exceptions is limited to a total of six years, there continues to be no particular limitation on stay for TN applicants so long as they can establish that they have not abandoned their residence in their home country.
