J Visas are issued to exchange
visitors participating in an exchange program
approved by the Department of State (formerly the
U.S. Information Agency) as a student, scholar,
trainee, teacher, professor, research assistant,
specialist, or leader in a field of specialized
knowledge or skill. J-1 Visas may be issued for a
maximum of 18 months.
In order to obtain J-1 status, we
must first seek the approval of a J-1 sponsoring
organization. Depending on the candidate’s
credentials and the training offered, there are
various sponsoring organizations that suit various
individuals. In order to submit a J-1 trainee
application with a sponsoring organization, we must
submit detailed training and orientation plans along
with a J-1 application form. Upon approval, the J-1
sponsoring organization will supply the beneficiary
with Form DS-2019. This Form is needed to apply for
a J-1 visa at a U.S. Consulate abroad.
Costs: We normally charge
a legal fee of $2,000 for preparation of the J-1
application and supporting documents. Out-of-pocket
expenses such as document translation costs,
overnight or courier delivery services, or
international telephone charges are not included in
this cost. Any such expenses will be billed as they
are incurred. Filing fees (which must be paid by the
employer) can range from $1,000 to $2,000, depending
on the sponsoring organization.
Timeframe: Processing time
of the various J-1 sponsoring organizations vary
greatly, from 48 hours to 1 month. Normally, the
more costly the J-1 sponsor, the more expeditious
the processing time.
